Afro Samurai

Hey he's got an Afro! Great anime. Check it out if you haven't.

Bionic Commando

This game is sweet. It's not perfect but it's so much fun swinging around a ruined city with a massive robot arm.

I'm thinking about trying to make one. Not a functioning one sadly, but a prop arm. I'll see how I go. It'll probably end up being a bunch of cardboard duct taped to my arm...

Anyway if you're into games and haven't played Bionic Commando then give it a go. It's good brainless fun.

Too Super page 1

Here's a sneak peek at the page 1 pencils for my new comic, 'Too Super'.

I'm still searching for a colourist...

Ryu

Ah Street Fighter...

Who doesn't love Ryu? No one that's who. Everyone who didn't love him has been taught the error of their ways by his superior martial arts..

The Trail Begins

Here's a shaded version of a SteamBat picture I did earlier.

The mystery begins to unfold as Batman finds the first clue...

The Machine Girl

Man the Machine Girl is one of the worst movies ever. It's cheap, has dodgy special fx, worse acting, and some of the goriest gore that I've ever laid my eyes on.

But I love machine gun limbs! I want a machine gun arm. It would come in so handy for all the times I need to destroy something, which is like, every day.

Vince

This is Vince. He's the dude with all the armour on in a previous post. 'The Bad Guy'.

He was originally going to be a younger fellow, but I opted to make him an older, tattooed more grizzled man. He has military experience and tattoos to prove it. And guns too.

Batman 2040

Batman 2040. I just love Batman. Do you get that by now?

He's just so cool. I wish I was Batman. There. I said it. Leave me alone.

Super MineSweeper 3D

This is a graphic I did for my mate Gary. He got himself an iPad weeks before all the slobs who lined up for days outside Apple stores around Australia, and got to work producing 'Super MineSweeper 3D'.

If you've ever played minesweeper before prepare to be blown up/away. The App may even be available right now. I'm not sure as I'm too poor to own an iPad right now. *weep*.

Anyway once you do fire it up this is the graphic you'll be met with. Plus a title in the big open black part of the canvas there. Just look at that fool! About to drill right into a mine. Idiot.

Buy the App and enjoy Gary's programming skills and very briefly each time you open the App; my art skills.

PS. I've been even more slack with my updates I know. I'm pathetic. Sorry to my legion of 12 followers and the other 3 people who maybe read this blog. I'll try do better for you all.

Now we can all do it!

Well this is all pretty self explanatory I think.

Maybe panel 3 should have had the guy doing that annoying heart thing that Justin does with his hands. *shudder*

Incase you're unsure where I stand, don't ever buy me a Justin Bieber album and expect me to let you live.

Leonidas Inked

And here's the inked version.

Obviously there's a bit more to it than the pencils, but I think I still like the pencil sketch better.

Leonidas

Figured it was about time I did a self-portrait. Uh... Let me start again.

I started sketching everyone's favourite leather underwear sporting Spartan.

I've also started inking it on computer but I much prefer the pencils. There's something about pencil artwork that I really like. I think it's the scratchiness. The little nuances that show up in an artists work that don't translate to inks.

I'll continue with inked version and post it as well, but I'm thinking maybe it's time to start trying some new techniques.

Anyway enjoy the underpants.

Polar Bear For Life

This is a logo I did for Polar Dave. He's going away to New Zealand so as a going away gift I turned this out onto a shirt for him.

We Polar Bears were born down at Nanga Bush Camp on a cold and frosty morning. Braving the icy temperatures of the winter river we tested our limits, and emerged forever transformed.

Don't mess with the Polar Bears.

Killing Time Page

Here's a random page from Killing Time. Page 8 to be exact. This is taken from my 30 page submission that I am still in the process of sending around to publishers.

To put it simply it's about Ninjas in the future. It's kind of Naruto meets BladeRunner.

The story is set in a large derelict part of a city that has been walled off to house an ever growing population of criminals. Divided into 3 security classes the prison city houses everyone from petty thieves to cannibalistic murderers.

Guarded by a large team of well trained, well armed guards the city remains a relatively safe environment. That is unless you enter the high risk zones.

Inside the city lives the remnants of two ancient ninja clans. Their techniques and appearances are varied. As are their motives for joining with the clans to begin with. Both clans operate separately to the rest of the prison. Staying mostly out of the general population they wage their war from day to day. And night to night of course.

For a good deal of these ninjas, the prison city offers the perfect testing ground. They enjoy more freedom to practice their violent arts than would be available in the outside world.

The young guy in the foreground of panel 1 is the newest recruit to the war.

He has a surprise in store for everyone, including himself.

The Bad Guy

This is the bad guy in my new book. There are numerous bad guys, but all of them will pretty much be incidental aside from this dude.

His name is Vince and as you can probably guess he's a bank robber. But he's a bank robber with a bit of a twist. He's pretty well kitted out here, ready to make some phat stacks.

There's not much to say about Vince at the moment. He's a family man. He has a tattoo sleeve. He's a smoker. He may or not have a beard/goatee. I don't think I've ever really done a character with much facial hair. Suplex has some obviously. I haven't finalised Vince' design yet so we'll see. The book could well become a beard club.

I'll keep putting up designs as they come. I also have about 5 or 6 unfinished sketches of random stuff in my sketchbook. I'll try to muster up the bother to finish them off and post them.

In the meantime as I've said before, please feel free to make sketch suggestions. It helps motivate me to draw more and will hopefully provide some diversity. So suggest away.

Until next post, fare thee well.

My Mate Suplex

I'm still in the process of sending my Killing Time submission around to various publishers. While I'm waiting to hear back, I've started work on another project.

This guy is the hero. His name's Suplex. I won't say too much right now but the book will be a different slant on typical superhero stories. I'm pretty pumped. I've already done the rough copy of the first two issues of the script and it's flowing nicely as far as I can see.

It's going to be 5 - 8 issues worth. All depends on how the characters develop etc. I know the ending so I'm just working toward it.

Stay tuned for more sketches. I'll try make updates more regular (okay I'll try harder).

Sleazy street tee

So much for being lazy! Second post in one day. You lucky devils.

Here's the next design in my wildly successful 'Simple Pleasures' line up. "How can it be wildly successful with just TWO designs!?" I hear you ask?

It can't be...

But maybe it will be one day. Time will tell. And then I will tell. you. again.

So here it is anyway. Sleazy Street. Oh yes and what a lesson you will learn. A lesson you'll not soon forget. So to quote the big clock in the Perth CBD with the mechanical jousting knights in it, "Take heed and see ye nothing do in vain, for no minute gone comes ever back again. Especially after some furry creature has unloaded on you with an AK 47."

Okay so I paraphrased but you get the idea.

Of course reading this blog is no vain action. While you'll never get these moments back, I'm sure you feel all the richer for having viewed my art and read my drivel.

T-Shirt

I haven't updated the blog lately for numerous reasons.

reason 1: I'm lazy

reason 2: I've been working on things like this.

I've decided to start making money from my art (easier said than done) and so for starters I'm doing some designs for t-shirts etc. I'll have to come up with a few before I can start pimping them out for your capitalist pleasure.

This is a work in progress. Remember that concept bike from last post? This is it. The 'Simple Pleasures' on the sign? That's the name of my label. Since 1984? Well I was born in 84 so it all kinda started then didn't it?

Anyway. I've got a few ideas rolling around in my noggin which I'll be getting down soon I hope. In the mean time you can imagine walking around with this on your chest. And imagine everyone going "hey man/girl nice shirt! Where you get that from?" Won't you be popular!?

I'll try to make posts more regular in future too.

concept bike

This is a sketch in the rough stages of a bike design I'm working on.

I love motorbikes big time, but I've not drawn many. I like Harley's and wanna own one some day, but when it comes to artwork I'm more keen on sports bikes. Especially concept bikes.

Katsuhiro Otomo's Akira books have been a big influence on my own artwork for a long time now. In particular his environments. However he's an all round legendary artist, and some of his designs such as Kaneda's bike (you know the one... if you don't...tsk tsk...) are personal favourites of mine.

I'm going to do this bike in full colour. At the moment I'm just trying to nail down the definitive design for it. It's much easier to draw things from different angles if you actually know what it looks like in profile etc.

Anyway let me know if you want to see more of this sort of stuff. I do mostly figure drawing, so it's always nice to switch it up a bit.

Rob Multo

Now personally I'm not an Avatar fan. But I AM a Rob Multo fan. And he froths for Avatar. So here he is. As a Na'vi warrior. Ready to make halu with you...

Rob's gold. Be his facebook friend. You won't regret it.

the Sandman

Neil Gaiman's Sandman is a book that changed my perceptions.

Back when I was young and foolish(er) I thought that art was more important than story. I didn't really care if a comic's story was garbage, as long as I enjoyed the artwork. A plot was just an excuse to string together images of women with next to nothing on, being saved by/fighting against/alongside roided up dudes with scowls frozen on their faces.

Enter the Sandman.

From the day I started to take in the story, my eyes opened. I realised what I had been missing. I couldn't believe how superbly it was written. How immense the story was. How unique it was. I didn't even understand all of it. I'd sit there knowing that I was missing the true depth of this amazing book. But what I could understand blew me away.

I stopped collecting half of the books I had been up to that point. They didn't measure up. It was that simple. Suddenly I became more discerning, and art became less important.

I'm no literary genius. My writing is nothing to cross the street for. I have said- and will always say- I'm an artist. I'll never call myself a writer. Not really anyway. So my stories are usually an excuse for me to draw cool stuff. I enjoy it. But when it comes to stuff I choose to read. The bar is higher now that I've read Gaiman's epic.

I'm currently re-reading the whole thing. I'm finally understanding it. I'm being blown away all over again. "The Sound of Her Wings" is an incredible chapter. It's one of the parts that I didn't understand before, and I honestly feel richer now that I have a grasp on it.

If you haven't read this series then do yourself the favour. It's not 'just a comic'. It's a series that anyone can enjoy.

In regard to the picture. I'm not satisfied with it. I like it better in pencils. I just can't get the background happening and it's been driving me mad. I put up the colour version because I poured hours into it. Ah well.

By the way, the girl is Dream's sister Death. She's cool.

A Study

I thought I'd do more of a portrait sort of thing. This is Breaker. No he doesn't have my name tattooed on his chest. It says 'Marion'. Long story. Buy the comic to find out more.

This took a while to do. I actually sketched out the basic line work ages ago but I thought it wasn't working so I gave up on it till a week ago.

I'm glad I took the time to finish it off. A vast majority of my stuff is just line work, so to do some pencil shading was a good change of pace. It still has a comic book look to it, but it's a bit more 'realistic' than my usual style.

Spawn Mac Skin Deploy!

My Mac skin arrived today. I put it on straight away and stood back and admired it.

Totally pimped out my already sweet MacBook.

These things look awesome. Great print quality and a great fit. I'm gonna be selling these bad boys now that I know they're good quality. If you're interested in a custom skin then let me know and we'll work something out.

The Man

Dave Mustaine. What a legend. This is kind of how he goes off on stage. I should put a snarling sound effect in the background there.

Megadeth are currently touring the US playing their album Rust in Peace, start to finish.

I can only hope that Dave sees this picture and decides that he absolutely must come see me, and play Rust in Peace for all us Aussies. I'm holding my breath...

Last time they were in town, a good friend of mine got to chauffeur them around. They hung out at the beach, drank coffee and just chilled out. I was at work which kind of didn't measure up.

The Big Smash

James and Breaker from 'Killing Time' in a mild sparring session.

I'll have a colour version of this at some time. Try to add another dimension to the art.

This is just a glimpse of the action that'll be seen in Killing Time once it gets picked up by a publisher... Whenever that happens. Keep your fingers and toes crossed if you like this.

I've got plenty of crazy characters just waiting to make it to the page, and they've all got their own techniques that they're just dying to show off. Should be good. Even if I say so myself.

...Man I'm modest.

Wolverine 2

Here's a Wolverine sketch I've done at the request of Jacko, and according to him, for everyone else as well because everyone wanted to see Wolverine.

So enjoy Jacko. Maybe I'll do some more later. Or colour this one. Or both...

I do like Wolverine. I like his attitude. I really wish Wolverine was shown to be more wild in the movies. I know that Hollywood has to appeal to the broadest audience possible, and depicting a more savage Wolverine would have netted Hugh and co. less greenbacks (or purple, blue, red, gold and green backs since Hugh's an Aussie) but still...

I feel Wolverine is a more relative hero in this day and age than others like Superman or Captain America.

Things aren't as black and white as they used to be. Bad guys can be good guys. They don't have to be squeaky clean. They don't have to be "Captain" anything. They just need to be 'enough' of something. They just need enough motivation to make a stand, even if it's on shaky ground.

This is officially my longest post now. Maybe you're only here for the pictures, but if you're interested in more than that, then feel free to leave comments and your own opinions.

Fuel

This is the first drawing I ever did entirely digital. Start to finish on the graphics tablet I had received that day. What an occasion.

Fuel is another Killing Time ninja

Sling

Sling is one of the clan leaders inside the prison city walls of Killing Time. He's bad news wrapped in Kleenex. He's not really wrapped in toilet paper. That'd be stupid. Although it would come in handy once or twice a day.

Breaker

This is Breaker from Killing Time. He breaks stuff. Accidently, on purpose, it doesn't matter. He just breaks stuff. Particularly other peoples bones. He's an ex-biker who's joined one of the ninja clans. He also becomes a good friend to James, the story's protagonist. He has more tattoos than I've drawn here but you get the idea.

He might not look like a ninja but he is. Stealth just aint his specialty.

Wolverine

This is a crummy half sketch I couldn't be bothered finishing on the plane. I've only drawn Wolverine a few times which is kind of strange since he's the sort of character that appeals to me.

I uploaded this for Jackson since he is my first follower. I'll do a better one later and dedicate it to Jacko. For now you shall all have to look at this rubbish.

Oh and I'm now taking requests for sketches. Send me a message if you wanna see Superman or Jesse Custer or Wonder Woman or anything else. I can draw IT ALL!!!

Sadie

This is one of my dogs, 'Sadie'. She's no cleaning lady. She ruins things and loves to be in the dirt getting filthy. We should have called her Destructo or something.

Great dog though.

Immortal Iron Fist

The Immortal Iron Fist is the champion of the city K'un L'un... from memory. He channels the chi of Shao Lo the Undying. He will mess up your face real good. If you want some great Iron Fist artwork then look for Travel Foreman's stuff.

Blade of the Immortal

I'm currently collecting Blade of the Immortal books. I just love Samura's artwork. His figure drawing is effortlessly brilliant, and the way he captures movement and gesture so perfectly is stunning. My sketch is by no means a gauge of his work.

If you're into great stories and awesome art, I just can't recommend Blade of the Immortal enough. Plus Manji is one of the coolest characters ever.

Mach

This chap is Mach. Also from 'Killing Time'. Doing his bit for Ninja kind.

Piccolo

SPECIAL BEAM CANNON!!! Yes I'm aware I've forgotten a few details in Piccolo's design, such as the bands around his wrists, and the lines all over him. Ah well. Maybe I'll do another to rectify the situation.

KAME HAME HA!!!

This is a personal favourite of mine. For a long time I had wanted to do some sketches of my favourite Dragon Ball characters, but in my style. I finally got around to it laying on the beaches of Thailand. I plan to do something similar to this as a Laptop skin. Full colour, full detail of course. Let me know if you're interested.

Ayame

Adding a splash of colour to March is Ayame, from Tenchu: Stealth Assassins originally on Playstation. I did this pic for my sister Emily. One of the first pictures I did entirely on my Wacom Cintiq.

Diora

Diora is a character from my Comic 'Killing Time'. She's the young protege of Rale, prison guard turned heavily armed ninja bad boy.

Japan Batman

Incase you haven't had enough Batman for the month of March, here's a sketch of Batman dropping in on some wayward Samurai. I did this on the flight over to Japan.

Bat Wayne

Here's a sketch of Batman, with Bruce Wayne present.

Going Berserk

I recently finished watch the anime Berserk. Great anime. Watch it. Personally I wished they looked more at Guts after he became, 'The Black Swordsman" rather than focusing on the early days, but oh well. This is Guts as the Black Swordsman. Going Berserk as he does.

Through Enemy Eyes

I've for a while now been dead keen on Batman. I wanted to do a sketch of Batman without the Bruce Wayne side of him. How does Batman appear through the eyes of a terrified henchman?

'Through Enemy Eyes' was a title I was thinking of as I drew this sketch.

Spawn Mac Skin

This is an image I did to create a skin for my MacBook. When fitted to the Mac, Spawn will be holding the Mac logo. SWEET! If you want something similar then they will be available for purchase in the near future. Contact me if you want details. I'll also be doing a range of other designs, suitable for all types of laptops.
Sketch of Kratos, from God of War.

DRAW!

Welcome to my blog. I'm well behind the times in this digital age, so you'll have to forgive the starting quality of my blog. I assure you it'll only get better.

This blog is for artwork. It's that simple. If you want to see sketches and junk then you're in the right place. If you want to request sketches of your favourite characters/robots/vehicles/anything at all, well then come back a little later and you'll be in the right place. I gotta get this blog started before I take requests, so give me a sec.

In the meantime, I'll be posting sketches from comics I've been reading, shows I've been watching, new stuff, old stuff, whatever.

Enjoy.
